Tanzania

What’s It Like?

The Tabora Region of Tanzania, located in the mid-western area of the county, is home to nearly 4 million people. The District of Igunga, where Pastor Ruben lives and works, has a population of over 500,000.

Life in Igunga is what those in the West would call "third-world." Running water is available in some places but not all. Understanding of basic hygiene is scant. Buildings are often a combination of mud bricks and metal sheeting with dirt floors.

On average, the cost of living in Tanzania is much lower than in the US! This means that every dollar given is significantly stretched.

TANZANIA— Is just south of the equator on the Indian Ocean coast. It has one of the fastest growing populations in the world.

IGUNGA district is in the NW corner of the Tabora region. Nzega district is immediately to the west of Igunga. The chief city of the area usually has the same name as the area itself. The red area above is Tabora city. The entire gray area is the Tabora Region.

TABORA REGION— Is the largest of 33 regions in Tanzania. It has a population of nearly 4 million. The Indian Ocean eastern half tends to be Moslem and the western half VERY nominal Christian. Many people consult ‘witch doctors’ regularly.

Pastor Ruben’s church Hope Baptist Church is in Igunga city (located in Igunga District. on the right edge of the above map). The 6 other places listed above show the locations of the 6 daughter churches. Mwanzugi is the nearest daughter church where ‘Tanzania Rising’ has already built a church (see the ‘Stories’ section on this website.)
